Embarking on a photographic odyssey: a journey into film photography

Welcome to my humble corner of the internet, where pixels give way to the time-honored charm of film emulsion. I am excited to invite you on a captivating voyage as we delve into the enchanting world of 35mm and medium format film photography. With each post, I intend to explore a realm where artistry, nostalgia, and creativity converge.

Why Film Photography?

In an era of rapid technological advancements and digital convenience, why choose to venture into the realm of film photography? To answer this question, I believe we must recognize that film possesses an inimitable allure. It’s not just about capturing moments; it’s about crafting an experience, a tangible connection to the past, and the thrill of waiting in anticipation as your images are developed. Through the grain, the colors, and the imperfections, film photography breathes life into every frame, painting narratives that are as emotive as they are authentic. There is something about the slower pace, the change in approach, and not wasting hours on a screen tinkering on Lightroom or Photoshop that is appealing (hell, maybe I’m just lazy).

Exploring 35mm and Medium Format

In our journey together, we will embark on a detailed exploration of both 35mm and medium format film formats. We will unravel the unique characteristics of each, diving into the distinctive frustrations qualities they impart to our photographs. From the accessible, versatile 35mm rolls that have stood the test of time to the larger-than-life medium format films cherished by pro’s and enthusiasts alike, we will leave no stone unturned in our quest for the grain. There might be the odd digital topic thrown in (it is what is is), but we will try to primarily try to do it for the grain.

Reviews of New(ish) Products

More and more people are rediscovering the nostalgia of film again or are discovering the joy of shooting film for the first time. This has meant that rather than seeing the slow death of the industry and trickle on the number of available film stocks over the years, we have been seeing old ones being revived (i.e., E100 Ektachrome thanks primarily due to Euphoria), some cine-stocks being redeveloped (anything Cinestill), and “new” ones being released (like Lomochrome color ’92). Join me as we keep a keen eye on the latest products hitting the shelves. We’ll review cameras, lenses, film stocks, and other accessories that enhance our craft, helping us elevate our skills and create breathtaking imagery. I’ll keep crossing my fingers (and toes) in hope and anticipation for a re-release of a full manual classic 35mm film camera.

Documenting My Photography Journey

As a hack of a passionate film photographer myself, this blog will not merely serve as an info-dump but also as a diary of my own photographic odyssey. I will document my experiences, failures, and triumphs, hoping to inspire fellow photographers to embrace the timeless charm of film. Together, we’ll share tips and tricks, learn from one another’s mistakes, and celebrate our shared love for the art form… and ultimately, try to feel a bit better about the $$$ that we all waste spend on this craft.

Community and Connection

Photography is not just about equipment and techniques; it’s a shared passion that binds a diverse community of individuals. I encourage you to actively engage with me and your fellow readers. Share your own experiences, ask questions, and let’s create a vibrant space where we can all grow as photographers. Misery loves company as they say.

Final Thoughts

In closing, let me express my deep gratitude for embarking on this voyage with me. I promise to [try to] deliver engaging, informative, and interesting content in the realm of film photography. Together, we will celebrate the beauty of analog imagery and honor the ridiculous financial choices we have made legacy of this art form.

So, grab your cameras, load your film, and let’s set sail on a wondrous adventure through the magic of film photography!
